Empire Magazine is celebrating its 25th anniversary by talking to the “World’s Greatest Directors” and giving previews of some of the most anticipated movies of the next few years.
The British movie magazine sat down with director Joss Whedon to discuss Age of Ultron on the English set of the movie. The conversation centered on the new villainy of the movie, which includes Baron Von Strucker (Thomas Kretchmann), Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). Whedon observed that each character had a carefully designed place in the story and none are “superfluous” just to titillate the audience. Whedon stressed that he “fiercely dislike[s] the idea of just throwing in more people for the sake of doing that.”
Whedon said he was also enjoying using Ultron in this picture. He described James Spader’s Ultron as basking “megalomania galore.” Whedon speaking about his big baddie: “He’s not a creature of logic – he’s a robot who’s genuinely disturbed. We’re finding out what makes him menacing and at the same time endearing and funny and strange and unexpected, and everything a robot never is.”
Finally, the preview talked to Whedon about his varied locations. Whedon explained that he wanted to use a fresh aesthetic for his sequel: “The number of different looks and textures and moods we’re getting from the British locations is stupid awesome”, he enthused, “because this, palette-wise, is very different. I’m trying to make a different film. Because why would you make one movie twice? That seems weird.”
Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled for release in the United States on May 1, 2015.
