Comic Book Market Maven: DC Ends July with Bang

The Big Two

The fifth Wednesday of a five week month is usually pretty quiet in terms of sales, with all but a few lingering titles already released earlier in the month. Not so this week, particularly for DC, as it releases “Harley Quinn #8″ and “Justice League #32.” Both landed in the overall top 10 last month, with Harley Quinn even surprisingly beating out one of Marvel’s Original Sin issues for the number-4 spot overall. Additionally, this week sees the release of “Sandman Overture #3.” The last issue was released all the way back in March and was the number four overall that month; there’s no reason to believe issue #3 won’t similarly land in the overall top 10 for DC as well despite the delay.

Marvel doesn’t have any new Spider-Man or Original Sin issues to release this week, but instead it’s offering up a handful of consistently-just-outside-the-top-10 titles: All New X-Men, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, and Uncanny X-Men. Those four series were Marvel’s numbers 5, 6, 8, and 9 ranked books last month, and while they probably won’t be able to beat DC’s strong trio of top new releases, at least Marvel is coming out of the month swinging with some of its strongest selling titles.

The Independents

Here is where the fifth really starts to take its toll, as few of the Independents have much in the way of notable releases. Dark Horse has the third issue of its Rebel Heist miniseries, which was the company’s third-best selling book last month, while Image releases “East of West #14,” as well as “Low #1,” a new high-concept series from frequent collaborators Rick Remender and Greg Tocchini; given the relative dearth of options, Low could debut with some strong numbers.

Comic Book Market Analysis

A relatively quiet fifth week for everyone but the Big Two. Marvel will make a valiant effort, but expect DC to emerge triumphant thanks to a pair of top 10 titles and a new issue of Sandman Overture.
